Community Development/Design is a collaborative activity initiated from the standpoint of citizens—stakeholders, users, residents. It is a means of living together with others, across diverse sensibilities and ways of knowing, within the broader context of the surrounding landscape, including the natural environment. In particular, the field of social welfare—closely tied to government systems—is prone to challenges arising in the gaps and touchpoints between those systems, where the urgent needs of individuals often go unaddressed. Furthermore, when applying communication design—which has historically evolved to influence consumer behavior—to community settings where citizen rights and agency are central, an ethical foundation is essential. Let us study and practice together, exploring inclusive approaches to design that support people who face social isolation and difficulty in their lives.

I define Community Development/Design as “an effort to open up and support the relationships and experiences of socially isolated individuals within the intermediary domain of the community—its local society and environment; and a practice of overcoming everyday challenges together with those who happen to be present, passing on hope to the next generation.” Based on this definition, I have engaged in practice, research, and education. Currently, I focus on practical and research-based work in the field of child and family welfare, grounding my approach in the techniques and thinking of communication design and drawing on my perspective as a licensed social worker. I emphasize collaborative problem-solving with diverse stakeholders in real-world settings.
