Construction and evaluation of an intrinsic design method that takes questions originating from within the individual as its starting point

The purpose of this study is to construct and evaluate an intrinsic design method that takes questions originating from within the individual as its starting point. The approaches to intrinsic design include artistic thinking, which focuses on the cognitive processes unique to artists, and design-driven innovation (DDI), which involves radical changes in the existing cultural and social meanings of objects, i.e., innovation of meaning, based on cognitive processes. Various design methods, including tools and methods, have not been reported. This study has two implications. First, it is positioned as post-design thinking. Both art thinking and DDI are research subjects in their budding stages. By establishing useful methods in this context, we believe we can gain initiative in academia, practice, and education over the next 20 years. Second, it will contribute to innovation. By utilizing art thinking and DDI, it will be possible to contribute to product development oriented toward disruptive innovation that creates 1 from 0 and innovation of meaning that radically changes the cultural and social meaning of existing products.
