Development and evaluation of an evaluation method for circular design to support the transition to a circular economy

Circular design is required to design products, services, and social systems in line with the circular economy, which is expected to be transformed domestically and internationally. Although design methods have already been proposed for products and services with the aim of circular design, evaluation methods for circular design remain limited to quantitative assessment of environmental sustainability and evaluation of processes. In this study, therefore, we not only focus on environmental, economic, and social sustainability as the three elements of sustainability, but also construct a quantitative and qualitative evaluation method for corporate outputs and outcomes for customers and society. As a case study to validate this evaluation methodology, we will also develop a new inexpensive nutraceutical beverage made from coconut water and evaluate this product from the three sustainability perspectives to test its validity. This research will enable an objective evaluation of the sustainability of products with a circular design, and is expected to support the circular economy, which is expected to be realized domestically and internationally, from the perspective of product development.
